Polvo y Sombrero, a book project developed with Clara Sáez during our Master’s in Editorial Design. An exploration of the editorial process through concept development, grid and typographic design, and visual research, where images play a key role in shaping the book’s narrative and graphic identity.

This book shows a visual archive that traces the evolution of the figure and archetype of the witch in the Western world, from the 14th century to the present. Our research stems from the stereotypical image of the witch deeply rooted in Western collective imagination: old, ugly, evil, single or widowed; poor, dressed in black, wearing a pointed hat, with long nails, a hooked nose with warts, disheveled grey hair, and a piercing, frightening laugh. As we delved deeper into the subject, we began to ask ourselves: Why is she represented this way? What historical events shaped this archetype? Who were the real women behind these portrayals? And why were they judged and condemned?

Una exploració del procés editorial a través del desenvolupament conceptual, el disseny de retícula i tipografia, i la recerca visual, on les imatges tenen un paper clau en la construcció de la narrativa i la identitat gràfica del llibre.

Aquest llibre presenta un arxiu visual que traça l’evolució de la figura i l’arquetip de la bruixa al món occidental, des del segle XIV fins a l’actualitat. La nostra recerca parteix de la imatge estereotipada de la bruixa, profundament arrelada en l’imaginari col·lectiu occidental: vella, lletja, malvada, soltera o vídua; pobra, vestida de negre, amb un barret punxegut, ungles llargues, nas corbat amb berrugues, cabells blancs i despentinats, i un riure esgarrifós que ressona i espanta. En aprofundir en el tema, ens vam començar a preguntar: Per què se la representa així? Quins fets històrics han contribuït a crear aquest arquetip? Qui eren realment aquestes dones? I per quins motius van ser jutjades i condemnades?

Una exploración del proceso editorial a través del desarrollo conceptual, el diseño de retícula y tipografía, y la investigación visual, donde las imágenes tienen un papel clave en la construcción de la narrativa y la identidad gráfica del libro.

Este libro presenta un archivo visual que traza la evolución de la figura y el arquetipo de la bruja en el mundo occidental, desde el siglo XIV hasta la actualidad. Nuestra investigación parte de la imagen estereotipada de la bruja, profundamente arraigada en el imaginario colectivo occidental: vieja, fea, malvada, soltera o viuda; pobre, vestida de negro, con un sombrero puntiagudo, uñas largas, nariz aguileña con verrugas, cabello blanco y despeinado, y una risa penetrante y aterradora. Al profundizar en el tema, nos empezamos a preguntar: ¿Por qué se la representa así? ¿Qué hechos históricos han contribuido a crear este arquetipo? ¿Quiénes fueron realmente estas mujeres? ¿Y por qué fueron juzgadas y condenadas?
